Australia is a pretty big continent Admin - 7/14/2006 00:28
Australia is the smallest continent on earth. Stating that "Australia is a pretty big continent" is like saying "Black is a pretty bright colour". You might argue that there may be other, smaller continents on other planets that just haven't been discovered yet. But there is a limit to how small a landmass can be and still be called a continent. That's why Greenland is an island, although it's not that much smaller than Australia in absolute terms. The limit is somewhere between the two. That means that Australia is not likely to move away from the lower end of the scale, even if continents are discovered elsewhere.

Strictly speaking though, I admit that the phrase is still not an oxymoron, because it's a sentence rather than just a phrase of 2 words. Still, it's an interesting paradox that visitors to OZ hear quite often.
